HERO has implemented a feeding program for families and individuals who unfortunately are not eligible to receive food stamps because of legal status or other unfulfilled requirements. Every week, the HERO team distributes a bag of food to each of its members. The food is served inside HERO’s office in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
HERO offers a free literacy class several times a week for Haitian non-English speakers. In this class, students will be able to learn:
- how to read and write English
- useful tips for pronunciation and grammar
- basic conversational skills
Morning and afternoon schedules are available. Students may choose one of the following:
Monday – Wednesday – Friday

All items needed for the course will be provided to the student after registration.
When disaster strikes, the HERO team collects emergency items from different organizations, businesses and individuals and ships them directly to Haiti. HERO is dedicated to providing relief to victims and/or immigrants during their transitional period by giving referrals or by assisting them with applications.
H.E.R.O can provide referrals and services to facilitate low income families and individuals who are not able to afford some of their reoccurring monthly obligations. With our services, they may be able to obtain an extension or reduction on their bills.
The HERO team can assist people with filling out Food stamps and Medicaid applications online. Please be sure to bring all required identification for the application process. That includes:
- Current Florida Driver’s License
- Florida State ID
- Social Security Card
- Birth Certificate (for children)
- Resident/Alien Card
HERO serves as a drop-off location for people who wish to donate emergency items for babies, new mothers and the homeless. Here’s a list of the items needed:
- First-aid kits
- Medical supplies
- Hygiene items
- Water purification tablets
- Can goods
- Blankets
- Baby food
- Bottled water

HERO collaborates with Broward Community Health Services to provide assistance to low income families and individuals who need health insurance. Through the M.O.P.E.D. program, qualified individuals may be able to receive free health care services.
Assistance & Betterment Seminars
HERO collaborates with Florida Power and Light (FPL) to offer a free seminar to community members who may be facing a financial crisis. The goal of the program is to raise awareness on better energy conservation and improve the financial situation of low income individuals and families.
Each month, an energy efficient expert comes to the HERO office to share valuable tips on how to reduce expenditures on their monthly utility bill.
HERO members and other people in the community are encouraged to participate in a free seminar on health care. Different health experts from Broward Health are invited to the HERO location to provide useful information on nutrition, diseases such as cancer, diabetes and more. |
